Corrective actions
Cause/Symptom
•
Examine the /var/log/messages system log file for
error messages, and take any corrective action required.
Perform the appropriate action:
DHCP Process Will Not Start
Any attempt to start the DHCP process fails with errors.
•
Verify that the /etc/dhcpd.conf service configuration
file is valid. Verify it against the output of the examples
in dhcpd.conf(5).
•
Verify that DHCP is configured to serve IP addresses on
the correct network interface. Compare the output of
the ifconfig command and the contents of the /etc/
sysconfig/dhcpd
file to identify the correct interface.
•
Examine the /var/log/messages system log file for
error messages, and take any corrective action required.
DHCP Process Runs But Does Not Provide IP Addresses
The DHCP process appears to run, verified with the
following command, but the clients on the network are not
receiving IP addresses.
•
Verify that DHCP is configured to serve IP addresses on
the correct network interface. Compare the output of
the ifconfig command and the contents of the /etc/
sysconfig/dhcpd
file to identify the correct interface.
•
Verify that the IPTables on the CMS does not block
DHCP requests. Either examine the IPTables rules to
# ps -ef | grep dhcp
ensure that the UDP ports 67 and 68 are allowed, or
turn the firewall off.
•
Verify the /etc/dhcpd.conf file to verify that DHCP
is configured with sufficient IP addresses to supply
addresses for each of the managed systems, their
management processors, and onboard administrators.
•
Examine the /var/log/messages system log file for
error messages, and take any corrective action required.
IP Addresses Are WRONG
The IP addresses assigned to the managed systems do not
match the configuration of your DHCP server.
•
Verify that there is only one DCHP server on the
network.
•
Check that the CMS and managed systems are
networked properly, that is, either using a dedicated
management network or obtaining approval from your
network administrator to provide DHCP on a network.
•
Temporarily disable the DHCP service on the CMS with
the following command:
# /etc/init.d/dhcpd stop
Use another system, for example, a laptop PC, to renew
the IP addresses, identify the other DHCP server, and
to connect to it.
Optionally, connect to the other DHCP server to shut it
down or to move it to another network, making sure
that you do not interfere with your network's
configuration and services.
Choice of corrective actions:
IP Addresses Assigned by the DHCP Server Change
Frequently
The IP addresses assigned by the DHCP server to the
managed systems change frequently, which causes HP SIM
•
Consider configuring DHCP to provide static IP address
to the managed systems.
•
Verify that the lease times are long enough. HP
recommends relatively long lease times, measured in
to identify an improper IP address. The result is that certain
tasks that require this information cannot perform.
weeks rather than hours or days, for Insight Control for
Linux. See the HP Insight Control for Linux Installation
Guide for guidelines on setting lease times.
•
Verify that your DHCP server is configured with enough
IP addresses for each of your servers, management
processors, and Onboard Administrators. Typically, HP
recommends a range of IP addresses that is used no
