57.6.5.5 System Priming
Controlled venting of air is provided at the
injection pump through the fuel drain manifold.
Small amounts of air introduced by changing
filters or injection pump supply line will be
vented automatically, if the fuel filters are
changed in accordance with instructions.
WARNING
The fuel pump high-pressure fuel lines and
fuel rail contain extremely high pressure fuel.
Never loosen any fittings. Personal injury
and property damage can result.
IMPORTANT
Bleeding the fuel system is not
recommended nor required.
a. Manual priming may be required if:
• The fuel filter is not filled prior to installation.
• Injection pump is replaced.
• High-pressure fuel lines are replaced.
• Engine is run until fuel tank is empty.
b. Prime the fuel system as follows:
1. Stop the engine and remove the key.
2. Open engine compartment hood to lowest
position.
3. Turn the priming knob (A) counterclockwise
to unlock the plunger on the primary filter
head.
4. Pump approximately 120 times to pressurize
the fuel system.
5. Lock the plunger by turning knob (A)
clockwise until snug.
