Disk Groups
A disk group is the set or pool of physical disk drives in which a virtual disk is
created. The physical disk is a disk drive that plugs into a drive bay and
communicates to the controllers through the device-side Fibre Channel loops.
Only the controllers can communicate directly with the physical disks.
Collectively, the physical disks are called the array and constitute the storage pool
from which the controllers create virtual disks. One controller pair can support up
to 56 physical disks.
The following information is true about disk groups:
■
Each physical disk drive belongs to only one disk group.
■
Multiple virtual disks can be created in one disk group, up to the disk group's
capacity.
■
Each virtual disk exists entirely within one disk group.
■
A disk group can contain all the physical disk drives in a controller pair's array
or it may contain a subset of the array.
■
The minimum number of disks in a disk group is eight.
One disk group (the Default Disk Group) is created when the system is initialized.
Disk groups can be added, as needed, up to a maximum of 16.
The Default Disk Group is accessible using the folder structure in the Navigation
pane, as shown in
.
