Objects in DSNM Commands
Object Specifications
3-2
098571 Tandem Computers Incorporated
A wild card (*)—specifies all the objects of the specified type in the specified
subsystem under the specified manager.
The optional qualifiers that can be included in an object specification are:
Subsystem
Object type
Node
Manager
The hierarchy modifier determines which objects are to be included, based on the
subsystem object hierarchy. See Section 4, “Modifiers,” for detailed information on the
hierarchy modifier. The possible values of the hierarchy modifier are:
ONLY
SUBONLY
ALL
Section 2, “DSNM Commands,” provides the syntax for an object specification and
gives more detailed definitions for each of the terms in the syntax.
Effect of Qualifiers on
Names
The qualifiers of an object specification apply to every name in it, except that a node
can be given for each name individually. A node that is part of the manager name
applies to every name, overriding any node supplied as part of an individual name. In
addition, an object specification allows for a hierarchy modifier, which applies to the
names within that specification, not to the command as a whole.
The effect of qualifiers on the names in an object specification depends on the type of
name.
Object Names and Aliases
Object names and aliases represent individual subsystem objects that, if not
appropriately qualified, might be ambiguous or unresolvable. Ambiguous means that
there is more than one way that DSNM can resolve the name. If the name is
ambiguous, DSNM carries out the command, but the objects that are affected might
not be the ones you intended.
Unresolvable means that DSNM cannot resolve the name to any subsystem object. If
the name is unresolvable, DSNM returns an error message. For example, suppose
there are two Pathway servers with the name SERVER-X, under two different
Pathway monitor processes named $PM1 and $PM2. In addition, assume there are no
DNS database entries for SERVER-X. If you issue the following command, DSNM is
unable to determine the missing qualifiers; thus, SERVER-X is unresolvable and the
command cannot be carried out.
