About This Manual

098571 Tandem Computers Incorporated

xiii

Distributed Systems Network Management (DSNM) provides a single, consistent
command set that can be used to control and monitor objects belonging to certain
Tandem subsystems and user applications. This manual introduces the DSNM
command set, gives the syntax for each DSNM command, and discusses different
parts of the DSNM command syntax. This manual also explains how to use
NetCommand, the command-line interface to DSNM that is used in a Distributed
Systems Management Solutions (DSMS) environment.

Who Should Read This

Manual

This manual is intended for those who use DSNM commands to perform network
management tasks in a DSMS or NonStop NET/MASTER Management Services (MS)
operations environment.

What You Need to

Know Before Using

This Manual

To use this manual, you must be familiar with your network, its subsystems, and the
subsystem objects. Readers should be familiar with the Tandem Pathway and
Distributed System Management (DSM) products, particularly the Distributed Name
Service (DNS).

How This Manual is

Organized

This manual includes seven sections and an appendix. They are:

Section 1, “Introduction.” This section presents an overview of DSNM.

Section 2, “DSNM Commands.” This section explains the syntax and usage of all
DSNM commands, which can be issued in a DSMS and NonStop NET/MASTER MS
operations environment.

Section 3, “Object Specifications.” This section discusses the role of object
specifications in DSNM commands and syntactic considerations.

Section 4, “Modifiers .” This section discusses the role of modifiers and parameters in
DSNM commands, and syntactic considerations.

Section 5, “Subsystems.” This section gives information on how DSNM commands are
interpreted in each DSNM-supported subsystem and identifies the objects and
subsystem object hierarchy for each of those subsystems.

Section 6, “The NetCommand Interface.” This section contains instructions for using
NetCommand. NetCommand is the command-line interface for DSNM that is used in
a DSMS environment, with or without the Integrated Operations Console (IOC).

Section 7, “The NonStop NET/MASTER MS Interface.” This section gives highlights
on using DSNM commands in a NonStop NET/MASTER MS operations environment.

Appendix A, “Messages.” This section lists the error messages that can result when
issuing DSNM commands or when using NetCommand. It includes an explanation of
each error and suggestions for remedies.
