1 Overview of HP copy solutions
Continuous Access XP Journal
You can use HP StorageWorks Continuous Access XP Journal to create and maintain duplicate copies of
all user data stored on a distant array for data duplication, backup, and disaster recovery purposes. This
enables you to recover valuable data and protect it from a disaster, such as an earthquake, fire, or system
failure. Continuous Access XP Journal for a UNIX® or PC server provides asynchronous copy modes
to accommodate a wide variety of user requirements and data copy/movement scenarios. Continuous
Access XP Journal provides a superior hardware-based solution for data duplication, data migration,
remote copy, and disaster recovery tasks.
Continuous Access XP Journal operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary data volume of each
Continuous Access XP Journal volume pair to remain online to all hosts for read and write I/O operations.
Once established, Continuous Access XP Journal continues unattended to provide continuous, real-time
data backup. By establishing primary and secondary data volumes on different arrays, you can perform
asynchronous operations remotely. For Fibre Channel connections, you can perform Continuous Access
XP Journal operations across distances of up to 30 km (18.6 miles) using single-mode longwave optical
fibre cables in a switch configuration.
When using Continuous Access XP Journal, data being copied is temporarily stored in journal volumes,
which are a type of logical volume. You can use Continuous Access XP Journal to configure and manage
highly reliable data replication systems using journal volumes to reduce the possibility of copy operation
suspension. Copy operations can be suspended due to restrictions on data transfers from the primary site
to the secondary site.
You can perform Continuous Access XP Journal operations with Business Copy XP operations (see
Business Copy XP and ShadowImage for z/OS
) to provide multiple internal copies of Continuous Access
XP Journal volumes. Continuous Access XP Journal also supports Volume Manager and Cache LUN XP on
the local array, allowing Continuous Access XP Journal to meet a variety of user needs and facilitate data
copying and migration. See
Combining Continuous Access XP Journal with other data management
for more information.
The XP Remote Web Console software displays detailed Continuous Access XP Journal information and
provides options for configuring and performing Continuous Access XP Journal operations. The Remote
Web Console software communicates with the local array's SVP through defined TCP/IP connections. If a
system failure or disaster occurs at the primary site, the Remote Web Console software simplifies and
expedites disaster recovery procedures.
This guide describes and provides instructions for using the licensed the Remote Web Console software
to perform Continuous Access XP Journal operations. You can also use RAID Manager XP to perform
Continuous Access XP Journal operations from a UNIX or PC host. For more information about using
RAID Manager XP to perform Continuous Access XP Journal operations, see the HP StorageWorks
RAID Manager XP user guide. This guide does not cover Universal Replicator for z/OS® operations
for mainframe data. For information and instructions on performing Universal Replicator for z/OS
operations, contact your HP account support representative.
Business Copy XP and ShadowImage for Mainframe
You can use the Business Copy XP and ShadowImage for Mainframe data duplication features to set up
and maintain multiple copies of logical volumes within the same local array. You can perform Business
Copy XP operations for UNIX/PC server-based data using the licensed Business Copy XP or RAID
Manager XP on a UNIX/PC host. You can perform ShadowImage for Mainframe operations using
ShadowImage for Mainframe and also using TSO and/or ICKDSF commands.
RAID-protected Business Copy XP duplicates are created within the same local array at hardware speeds.
