8.5 Exchange of transducers - Pressurised condition
WARNING!
The tool is designed to be able to replace a transducer of a ultrasonic gas flowmeter - while it is
pressurized - in a safe way. Nevertheless, working with equipment with high gas pressure
requires utmost care. Observe the following precautions:
•
Make sure that staff working with this tool are familiar with and act accordingly with laws and
regulations - especially regarding safety - applicable to the site or location where the job will
be performed.
•
Make sure that staff supposed to work with this tool are adequately trained and educated and
have sufficient knowledge of the tool and the way to use it. It is recommended to attend a
training session that can be offered by the manufacturer.
•
Check the availability of all materials that may be needed; make sure that, once started, the
operation can be finished with the proper installation of a new transducer; the procedure
should not be interrupted because of any kind of interference or put on hold for reason of
lacking parts or materials.
•
Before starting the operation check if the equipment (retraction tool, bolts, tools) is complete
and in good working order. In case one or more bolts are missing, make sure replacement
bolts are conform to grade (strength) 12.9 (according to DIN ISO 898/1).
•
During the procedure a small amount of gas will escape. Check if this may lead to any health
risk due to hazardous substances.
•
Provide means to detect potentially dangerous concentrations of hazardous gases. Take
measures to avoid breathing escaping gas anyhow.
•
Make sure that there is enough free room for a fully extracted retraction tool around the
flowmeter.
•
Take precautions to prevent vehicles (fork ligt, crane etc.) to come close to the retraction tool
while it is installed on a meter; the risk that the tool accidentally will be hit (and damaged) by
such transportation means must be eliminated.
•
Check if the electric power supply of the meter can be switched off (necessary for reasons of
explosion safety). If the electric power supply can not or should not be switched off: make
sure a gas detector is available, to verify the absence of hazardous atmosphere when
performing the retraction and replacement of a transducer.
•
Do not use the tool to sit on, to lean on or step on it when installed on the ultrasonic gas
flowmeter.
•
Do not leave the retraction tool unattended while it is installed on a meter and the operation
is in progress until the operation is finished.
CAUTION!
•
Make sure it has been properly diagnosed and identified which transducer(s) is (are) suspect
and may need to be replaced.
•
Make sure an electronic instrument for measuring resistance and capacitance is available,
check that it is recently calibrated and fitted with fresh batteries (or spare batteries are
available.
