Latency
The time interval starting when the last bit of the
input frame reaches the input port and ending when the first bit
of the output frame is seen on the output port.
Locate
Using SNMP, report the switch or hub port that a
station is connected to.
MAC Address
The unique address of each hardware
component, NIC card, hub, switch, and so forth, on a network.
These are assigned by the manufacturer of the networking
equipment when the hardware is produced.
MAC Loopback
The process of transmitting and receiving
packets at the MAC layer and reporting delay, the quantity
transmitted and received as well as any errors that occur.
MIB
Management Information Base - A set of parameters that
are available and sometimes customizable that an SNMP
management station can query. Used to report status or
configuration information of components of a network.
Multicast
A subset of a Broadcast where a packet is only
delivered to a subset of all possible destinations that share a
multicast address.
NFS Server
Network File System - A Sun Microsystems
protocol allowing computers on the same network use data
stored on other computers as if it were on local disks. An NFS
server is usually a UNIX server.
Novell Server
A device that provides services such as file
services and print services in a network where a Novell
operating system is being used.
Ping
A commonly used test which determines whether a
device can be reached. Generally, from a command line a user
types ping a.b.c.d
IP address a.b.c.d can be reached. The response is often an
indication of the success of the test and a timestamp
designating the length of the query-response, usually in
milliseconds. The ping tests reachability by sending an ICMP
echo request to the destination and waiting for a reply.
POP
Post Office Protocol - E-mail post office protocol that
allows a single user host system to connect and download
E-mail.
