What to do with a new SmartMedia Card
SmartMedia cards need a slight amount of preparation before they can
be used with the Mp3-50, Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40. They are normally
shipped in a format which is ready to use with the Mp3-50, Mp3-50/8 or
Mp3-50/40. They only need to be ‘blessed’, which adds all of the firmware
and stuff that the Mp3 Players need to actually operate. This can only be
done on a computer which has had the Mp3-50 software installed on it,
and has an available USB port.
If a SmartMedia card has been formatted in a PC, the original format
will have been destroyed. It will not work in the Mp3-50, Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-
50/40 until the format is restored.
If you insert a SmartMedia card in an Mp3-50, Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40
and the Mp3 heart does not begin to flash soon after power is reapplied,
then there is most probably a problem in either the format or firmware in-
stalled on the SmartMedia card.
To format a SmartMedia card, plug the Mp3-50, Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-
50/40 into the USB port on your computer. After a few moments, an hour-
glass should appear once or twice while Windows digests this addition. After
that, open the Mp3 Formatter under the ‘Start’ button ‘Programs/SigmaTel
StMp3400 Mp3 Player/StMp2Format’.
Select the appropriate disk drive. Windows will assign the Mp3-50, Mp3-
50/8 or Mp3-50/40 SmartMedia card as the next available disk drive. The
files system for SmartMedia cards of up to 64 MBytes should be ‘FAT12’.
