Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 Serial Configuration
Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 is configured through the USB port (or Smart-
Media card installed in any compatible hole in your computer) using the
‘Mp3 Configurator’ program. As a backup, or for those of you who have
not configured or installed your SmartMedia card, there is a series of config-
uration commands available on the Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 that will allow
you to configure the Show Control half of the device. Once the Smart-
Media card is configured and inserted into the Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40,
the configuration you have set on using the ‘Mp3 Configurator’ program
will overwrite any configuration you have made directly through the serial
port.
The Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 can be accessed through the RS-232 seri-
al port from any computer running just about any modem or terminal pro-
gram. The computer you are using doesn’t even need to have any
PC•MACs software installed on it.
The Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 is normally accessed through its RS-232
serial port. A configuration option available through the ‘Mp3 Configurator’
program is to take over the DMX-512/MIDI serial port to use it as a RS-422
receive-only serial port. This is called ‘Net Serial’ mode. Selection this option
disables DMX-512 in and out, MIDI in, and IR Trigger in. Up to 256 different
cards and devices can be attached to the same serial lines, to form a com-
plete RS-422 ‘multi Drop’ network. Anywhere on this network you can attach
operator panels to access and control it, or you can use a telephone or In-
ternet modem so that it can be accessed from around the block or around
the world. Commands can be addressed to a single card on the network,
or all the cards simultaneously. When in ‘Net Serial’ mode, any serial re-
sponses from the Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 will be sent out through the nor-
mal RS-232 serial port. You will not get responses on the DMX-512/MIDI out
terminals.
Typical modem programs you can use with Gilderfluke & Company
equipment are Terminal.exe (which came with Windows 3.1) and HyperT-
erm.exe (which comes with later versions of Windows), or our favorite,
GilderTerm.
GilderTerm is available free from Gilderfluke & Co. for use with all of our
products. It can be downloaded from our web page, and is included on all
of our CD-ROMs. GilderTerm has been optimized for use with all Gilderfluke
& Company equipment. All of the commands are built in, and it will even
let you use your mouse to select commands.
To use the Mp3-50/8 or Mp3-50/40 with a terminal program, just con-
figure it for 9600 baud, no parity, eight data bits, one stop bit and ‘xon/xoff’
