Securing ends
To avoid unraveling, it is necessary to leave a thread chain
2" {5 cm) long at the beginning and end of the seam. To
secure the beginning and end of the seam choose one of
the follow/ing methods.
* At the beginning of the seam
® Separate the thread ends and tie them into a knot.
® Thread the chain through a large eyed needie, and
weave that chain through the overlook stitches on the
fabric.
(c) Apply a small amount of seam sealant (Fray
Checto“ or Fray-No-More^“) at the edge of the
fabric. Cut the chain at the edge of the fabric.
• Backstitching
Before putting your fabric in the machine, sew a thread
chain about 2" {5 cm) long behind the needie.
Put your fabric In the machine. Then serge a few stitches
and stop.
Raise the presser foot and bring the thread chain to the
left around and under the presser foot.
Place the thread chain between the presser foot and
upper knife, holding it in position as you lower the
presser foot to sew.
After sewing about 1" (2.5 cm), move the chain to the
right and under the upper knife, cutting the chain as you
sew.
At the end of the seam
You can use the same methods as above to secure the
end of the seam except “backstitching". You can also use
the methods shown below.
Serge one stitch off the end of the seam.
Raise the needle and presser foot, and gently puli the
threads off the prong.
Turn the fabric over so that the under side is up.
Serge about 1" (2.5 cm) over stitching and angle off the
fabric.
