8 Working with virtual disks

A virtual disk is disk capacity allocated from one or more storage pools to one or more hosts.

To create a standard virtual disk, you need at least one storage pool with available free capacity.
Cluster virtual disks are created as standard virtual disks and then defined as clustered. For a description
of creating SAN API virtual disks, see

Creating the setup virtual disk

” on page 373.

You can:

View the virtual disks list (view all virtual disks defined in the local domain)

View virtual disk information (view information about each virtual disk in the tabs area)

Create virtual disks

Rename virtual disks

Convert virtual disks to thin provisioned virtual disks

Expand virtual disks (expand the capacity of existing virtual disks)

Manage virtual disk permissions (assign, remove, and change host permissions for a virtual disk)

Manage Data Path Modules (set primary and secondary DPMs, and switch the currently active
DPM. These options are relevant to virtual disks used by user-defined hosts (UDHs).

Define virtual disks as clustered

Clear persistent reservations

Add applications to virtual disks (define the type of application used by a virtual disk)

Manage OpenVMS Unit IDs (OUIDs) for virtual disks (assign, change, and remove an OUID for
a virtual disk)

Delete virtual disks

Viewing the virtual disks list

The virtual disks list displays all virtual disks defined in the local domain. This includes virtual disks
that were created directly by VSM users for allocation to hosts and virtual disks created as part of a
VSM operation, such as the creation of a snapshot PiT.

To view the virtual disks list:

1.

In the navigation tree, expand the Entities node.

2.

Click the Virtual Disk node. The virtual disks list appears in the list area. The following properties
are displayed for each virtual disk.
