Example 4 When using GL-RHG as safety device for press machine in Japan
Safety distance calculation according to the Standard for power press machine
The following is the safety distance calculation formula described in Article 43 of "Standard for the
mechanical structure of power presses (Notification of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare No. 4
dated at January 12, 2011)" based on Article 42 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act. The following
example shows reference values. When installing GL-RHG to the press machine, follow the "Standard for
power press machine".
Equation
D = 1.6 × (Tl + Ts) + C
D
: Safety distance (mm)
Tl
: GL-RHG response time (ms)
Ts
: Maximum time required by the press machine to stop after receiving a signal from the
GL-RHG. (ms)
" Response time (OSSD)" page 7-5
C
: Additional distance according to Detection capability in the following table
The safety distance (D) is calculated using the equation and the installation distance (A) is determined.
When the horizontal distance between the optical axis and the front end of bolster exceeds 400mm or
even less, if a person may possibly enter between the optical axis and the front end of bolster, install a
supplementary axis or an additional guard.

Example
The following example shows when using GL-R24HG (optical axis: 24) with the wire synchronization system.
According to the specifications of GL-R24HG, Tl = 7.0 ms, continuous light-blocking width (Detection
capability) 25 mm, thus, additional distance C = 0 mm and Ts = 180 ms.
D = 1.6 × (180 + 7.0)
= 299.2 mm
The safety distance is calculated as 299.2 mm.
