Overview of XP Remote Web Console Operations 14
1-4 Important Terms and Concepts
The XP Remote Web Console user should be familiar with the following terms and concepts:
•
Disk controller frame. The XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array subsystem has one disk controller frame that
controls all data access and storage operations. The XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array provides up to 64
logical control unit (CU) images and supports 3990-6, 3990-6E, and 2105-F20 controller emulation types.
Note: The 3990-3 and 2105-E20 controller emulation types are not supported.
•
Disk array frame. The disk array frame of the disk subsystem contains the storage components (hard disk
drive arrays).
•
Parity group. A parity group (also called an array group) is a set of hard disk drives that are treated as one
group. For example, a RAID-5 3D+1P parity group consists of four disk drives (3 data and 1parity). A
parity group contains both user data and parity information. The parity information is used to automatically
reconstruct the user data if one of the disk drives in the parity group becomes unavailable.
•
LDEV (logical device). The XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array subsystem supports a maximum of 16,384
LDEVs. An LDEV used by mainframe hosts can be called a device, a logical volume image (LVI), or a
volume. An LDEV used by open-system hosts can be called a device (for example, SCSI disk device or raw
device) or a logical unit (LU or LUN). The XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array subsystem supports a maximum
of 512 LU paths per fibre-channel port.
•
Java™ applet program. The XP Remote Web Console is provided as a Java™ applet program. When an
XP Remote Web Console user accesses and logs on to the desired SVP, the Java™ applet is downloaded
from the SVP (web server) to the XP Remote Web Console client. The Java™ applet program runs on a web
browser on the XP Remote Web Console client.
•
RMI™ (remote method invocation). RMI™ is a remote procedure call that allows Java™ objects stored in the
network to be run remotely. In the XP Remote Web Console network environment, the XP Remote Web
Console downloads Java™ objects from the SVP.
•
CU (control unit). The XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array subsystem supports a maximum of 64 logical CU
images numbered sequentially from 0–3F. Each CU image controls up to 256 LDEVs. LDEVs within the
XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array subsystem are accessed by a combination of CU image number and
device number (00–FF). Table 1.1 lists the device numbers for each CU image.
