Glossary-4
DeviceNet Communications Module
MDI product - A device that uses the MDI communications
interface to communicate with one or more peripheral devices. For
example, a motor drive such as an MD65 drive is an MDI product. In
this manual, an MDI product is also referred to as “product” or
“host.”
module - Devices such as drives, controllers, and computers
usually require a module to provide a communication interface
between them and a network such as DeviceNet. A module reads
data on the network and transmits it to the connected device. It also
reads data in the device and transmits it to the network.
The MDCOMM-DNET DeviceNet module connects MD65 drives to
a DeviceNet device level communications network. Modules are
sometimes also called “adapters,” “cards,” “embedded
communication options,” “gateways,” and “peripherals.”
node address - A DeviceNet network can have as many as 64
devices connected to it. Each device on the network must have a
unique node address between 0 and 63. Node address 63 is the
default used by uncommissioned devices. Node addresses are
sometimes called “MAC IDs.”
non-volatile storage (NVS) -The permanent memory of a device.
Devices such as the module and drive store parameters and other
information in NVS so that they are not lost when the device loses
power. NVS is sometimes called “EEPROM.”
objects - The DeviceNcet specification defines an object as “an
abstract representation of a particular component within a product.”
operator interface module (OIM) - A device that can be used to
configure and control an MD65 drive.
PCCC (Programmable Controller Communications Command) -
The protocol used by some controllers to communicate with devices
on a network. Some software products (for example, VS Utilities)
also use PCCC to communicate.
Polled I/O Data Exchange - A device that is configured for polling
I/O data exchange sends data immediately after it receives a
request for the data. For example, a module receives a Logic Status
Command from the scanner and then sends the Logic Status of the
connected MD65 drive.
