Tempest®24 00 2 -Channel Wireless Intercom System
2-Wire (Party-Line) Interface
2-Wire party-line intercom systems carry one or two (depending on the system type) channels of full duplex intercom audio, plus
system power and other informati on on a single XLR-3M cable (2 wires and a ground). Each 2-Wire intercom type has a diff erent
wiring scheme and unique line characteristi cs. It is imperati ve to have the rear panel connecti ons and the front panel setti ngs
adjusted correctly for audio to pass correctly between the systems.
Steps to Confi gure a 2-Wire Intercom Connecti on
•
Adjust the Intercom Type Slide Switches to appropriate manufacturer compati ble setti ng- RTS, Clear-Com, Bal.
•
Select 2-Wire connecti on for the appropriate channels.
•
Make the 3-pin XLR physical connecti ons to the Tempest BaseStati on and the 2-Wire system.
•
Null the system.
•
Adjust IN/OUT volume levels between the Tempest Wireless System and the 2-Wire system.
Always confi rm that the 2-Wire intercom system is functi oning properly before connecti ng the Tempest Wireless system.
Test each wired communicati on stati on before connecti ng the wireless system. Confi rm operati on of the wireless system
before connecti ng to the wired system.
Aft er the slide switch is set correctly, the appropriate channels are set for 2-Wire operati on, the XLR cable connecti ons are
made, and power is provided by the 2-Wire system or Master Mode, then audio will pass between Tempest and the wired
system.
Audio may develop an echo that is heard in the wireless BeltStati ons unti l the system is nulled. The echo should not prevent
communicati on but is undesirable. The volume levels into or out from Tempest may need adjusti ng so that relati ve volumes
are the same.
Echo Cancellati on Menu
In the BaseStati on’s Tech Menu is a selecti on for “Echo Cancellati on” (ECAN). This refers to soft ware that assists in removing echo
from 2-Wire intercom connecti ons. Hardware connecti ons need to be opti mized with the null procedure to minimize echo in the
physical link so that the soft ware can remove any residual echo.
In the Tech menu, “Echo Cancellati on” is “ON” by default, but is only enabled for channels that are selected for operati on with a
2-Wire intercom and have a physical connecti on to a 2-Wire system.
See “Nulling” Secti on of this manual.
If a 2-Wire intercom is never uti lized in a system, ECAN can be turned “OFF” to ensure that it cannot create undesirable eff ects.
This should not be necessary, though, and it is recommended that you keep ECAN “ON” at all ti mes.
ECAN is disabled while the BaseStati on’s Auto-Null or Manual Null menu screens are acti ve, to ensure that the hardware is
opti mized for echo reducti on. When ECAN is enabled, it requires up to 10 seconds of acti ve audio to achieve maximum effi ciency.
Brief loud acti ve audio can help accelerate effi ciency.
