Antenna Locati on
Proper antenna locati on is essenti al for opti mum system performance and
maximum range. Antenna positi oning is important with all RF systems and in all
applicati ons.
Locate the Tempest BaseStati on antenna as high as possible for your applicati on
to maximize line-of-sight RF operati on. Positi oning the antenna higher than head
level is the minimum acceptable height for most applicati ons. Maintaining line of
sight between the BaseStati on antenna and the BeltStati on(s) is ideal.
When using multi ple BaseStati ons, keep as much space between the antennas as
possible, but a minimum of 24 inches is recommended. Increasing the distance
between antennas to may help to improve performance.
If possible, locate the antenna(s) away from any metal obstructi ons and away from walls or other signifi cant structures, by
at least 24 inches.
When using omni-directi onal (Whip) antennas, always locate the antennas as close to the center of the coverage area as
possible. Omni-directi onal antennas have a circular patt ern and radiate RF energy equally in all directi ons at approximately
a 90° angle to the element of the antenna.
Other antenna opti ons are available including directi onal and higher gain antennas. Please contact your dealer or distributor
for more informati on on opti onal antennas. Only use approved antennas. Unauthorized antennas may be illegal.
Using more than one BaseStati on permits an increase in the number of wireless BeltStati ons within an area, or by uti lizing
one of Tempest’s roaming features, allows increasing the area covered and even allows for the creati on of separate, but
adjacent or overlapping coverage areas. The number of BaseStati ons that can be uti lized in a system is limited by RF
competi ti on between systems and several other RF conditi ons. Judicious placement of antennas can help facilitate a large
number of wireless BeltStati on users on a single system.

When rack mounti ng the Tempest BaseStati on or when it is stacked with other equipment,
always remote mount antennas or use the Tempest Remote Transceiver to ensure
maximum operati onal range.
