DDS Media Assessment test

Details/System Performance
test

There are two recommended options to control the behavior of the test:

Options

Test Type

(default is Read Only) —

To run the Read Only (data quality assessment) test, set the Test Type option
to Read Only.

To run the Overwrite (media assessment) test, set the Test Type option to
Overwrite

.

Amount of Media to Test

— The default amount of data read varies by

drive/tape generation (1 GB of data for DAT72 and 2 GB of data for DAT160 /
DAT320) and is enough for a valid read margin calculation to be performed. The
data read is sampled across the data on the media between BOD (beginning of
data) and EOD (end of data). The larger the value for this option, the greater amount
of data is read at each sample. This is done to enable an effective test to be
performed in a reasonably short period of time — approximately 8 minutes using
the default value.

To fully check all of the data written on the media, set the Amount of Media
to Test

option to Entire Tape, but note that this will take more time.

The following test options allow the test to be run outside of the standard operation
parameters. However, do not use these options unless advised to do so by HP Support:

Check WORM integrity

(default True) — When this option is set to True, the

Read Only test can be run on a WORM cartridge, which checks the integrity of
the WORM media and verifies that no one has tampered with the WORM cartridge.
This test does not allow writing to a WORM cartridge.

Ignore cleaning requests

(default False) — If the tape drive to be tested is

requesting cleaning, clean the drive before running the test. However, if a cleaning
cartridge is not available, you can bypass this check by setting this option to True.
In that case, the test will report that non-standard test options were used so the
results of the test cannot be guaranteed.

Allow Unqualified Drives

(default False) — Normally, this test can only be

run if the drive has recently passed the DDS Drive Assessment Test, ensuring that
the drive is in good condition. This option is used to bypass this check, which is
not recommended because any failures cannot necessarily be attributed to the
media.

This test will overwrite all data on the media if the Test Type option is Overwrite.
If the drive to be tested is part of an autoloader, the autoloader should be in random
mode prior to running the test.

Other notes

DAT72, DAT160, and DAT320 (pre and post-merger HP drives only).

Details/System Performance
test

This test monitors the temperature sensors of a DAT320 drive while writing data for
approximately 30 minutes, to ensure that the drive is cooling properly when installed
in a server.

Description
