Continuous Access XP Journal
This chapter describes and provides instructions for using the licensed Command View XP or XP Remote
Web Console to perform Continuous Access XP Journal operations. You can also use RAID Manager to
perform Continuous Access XP Journal operations from the UNIX or PC server host.
Business Copy XP and ShadowImage for z/OS
You can use Business Copy XP and ShadowImage for z/OS data duplication features to set up and
maintain multiple copies of logical volumes within the same local disk array. Business Copy XP operations
for UNIX/PC server-based data can be performed using the licensed Business Copy XP or RAID Manager
on the UNIX/PC server host. ShadowImage for z/OS operations can be performed using the
ShadowImage for z/OS and can also be managed using TSO and/or ICKDSF commands.
RAID-protected Business Copy XP duplicates are created within the same local disk array at hardware
speeds. You can use Business Copy XP with Continuous Access XP Journal to maintain multiple copies of
critical data at primary and/or secondary sites and provide maximum flexibility in data backup and
duplication activities. See ”

Continuous Access XP and TrueCopy for z/OS
You can use the Continuous Access XP and TrueCopy for z/OS data duplication features to create copies
of logical volumes in two different disk arrays at remote locations. Continuous Access XP operations for
UNIX/PC server-based data can be performed using the licensed Continuous Access XP or RAID Manager
on UNIX/PC server host. TrueCopy for z/OS operations can be performed using TrueCopy for z/OS and
can also be managed using TSO and/or ICKDSF commands.
Continuous Access XP provides synchronous (Continuous Access XP) and asynchronous (Continuous Access
XP Extension) copy modes. Continuous Access XP (synchronous) provides volume-based, real-time data
backup. Continuous Access XP Extension (asynchronous) provides volume-based, data backup at another
time from the host-requested write operation to prevent an increase in the response time to the host.
Continuous Access XP (synchronous) operations support the disaster recovery system by a three data center
(3DC) configuration with Continuous Access XP Journal operations. See ”

Overview of Continuous Access XP Journal
Continuous Access XP Journal provides a RAID storage-based hardware solution for disaster recovery that
enables fast and accurate system recovery. After Continuous Access XP Journal operations are established,
duplicate copies of data are automatically maintained for backup and disaster recovery purposes. During
normal Continuous Access XP Journal operations, primary data volumes remain online to all hosts and
continue processing read and write I/O operations. If a disaster or system failure occurs, the secondary
copy of data can be rapidly invoked to allow recovery with a very high level of data integrity. You can also
use Continuous Access XP Journal for data duplication and migration tasks.
Continuous Access XP Journal represents a unique and outstanding disaster recovery solution for large
amounts of data spanning multiple volumes. Continuous Access XP Journal’s group-based, update
sequence consistency solution enables fast and accurate database recovery, even after a “rolling” disaster,
without requiring time-consuming data recovery procedures. You can recover Continuous Access XP
Journal’s journal groups (volume groups) at the secondary site with full update sequence consistency, but
updates are behind the primary site due to asynchronous remote copy operations.
Continuous Access XP Journal provides update sequence consistency for user-defined journal groups (for
example, large databases) and protection for write-dependent applications if a disaster occurs.
When Continuous Access XP Journal is used, data to be copied is temporarily stored in journal volumes,
which are a type of logical volumes. You can use Continuous Access XP to configure and manage highly
