Preparation
Extend the boom 60%.
Lower the boom approximately I foot off the ground for easy accessibility.
Force the boom section being checked to the opposite side to achieve maximum gap
between bearing pad and side plate.
Note! If a wedge is used, do not distort the side plate.
Using 1/16" shim stock as a feeler gauge, check the gap between the boom side plate
and the pad.
If shim stock will not fit in the gap, the pad needs no adjustment.
If shim stock penetrates the gap, the pad needs adjustment.
Adjustment
Loosen the bearing pad mounting bolts on the pad and the pad on the opposite side
of the boom.
Select the correct size shims to bring the boom back into 1/16" tolerance.
Install shims Note! Keep shim packs equal. There should be no more than 1 shim
variance from the opposite side.
Re-torque the mounting pad bolts as required (using LOCTITE 242 per standard
Gradall recommendations).

Lower the boom to the ground, applying minimum down pressure sufficient to raise the
boom sections against the top bearing pads.
Using 1/16" shim stock as a feeler gauge, check the clearance between the bottom pads
and the bottom plate.
If shim stock will not fit in the gap, the pad needs no adjustment.
If shim stock penetrates the gap, the pad needs adjustment.
Adjust pads by loosening the mounting bolts, installing the correct shims cind re-torqueing
the mounting bolts (using LOCTITE 242 per standard Grodall recommendations).

Check
The top bearing pads rarely require adjustment. However, should adjustment become necessary:
Level the boom assembly.
Retract the boom assembly half-way.
Using 1/16" shim stock as a feeler gauge, check the clearance between the top pad and
the top boom plate.
Adjustment: If Clearance is Excessive
Determine the amount of shim stock required.
Remove the shim pack from the bearing pads on the opposite bottom.
Apply minimal down pressure to the boom sufficient to force the bearing pad
away from the inside top of the next outer boom.
Loosen the bolts on the bearing pads requiring adjustment, install a shim and re-torque
the bolts (using LOCTITE 242 per standard Gradall recommendations).
Re-shim the bottom bearing pads per instructions above, Adjusting Bottom
Bearing Pads.
