5-1 List of Pre-use check Items

After the SL-C series, the SL-R11 and the SL-R12EX are installed, the responsible personnel must use the
following checklist to check the operation. The following checklist contains the minimum necessary items for
using the SL-R12EX. The required check items will differ depending on the laws, ordinances, regulation and
other requirements of the country and region where the SL-R12EX is being used, as well as with the
machine onto which they are installed. Therefore, KEYENCE strongly recommends that the responsible
personnel add any required check items to this checklist.
This checklist is only to be used for the SL-R12EX, so refer to the SL-C Series and SL-R11 instruction
manuals to create a checklist based on using the SL-R12EX in combination with the SL-C Series and the SL-
R11.

5-1-1 Checking the SL-R12EX installation conditions

The SL-R12EX is installed in an appropriate enclosure with at least IP54 rating (in a control box,
etc.).

The muting lamp or the SL-R12D is installed at the location where they can always be clearly and
easily visible for the machine operators or the responsible personnel in cased of normal machine
operation, setting or alignment for muting or maintenance, etc.

If it is necessary to install 2 or more muting lamps, the muting lamps must be installed so that they
are connected in series to the LAMP terminal on the SL-R12EX terminal block.

Muting devices are installed such that the muting function cannot be active when the hazard of the
machine on which the light curtain is installed exists on the machine side of the light curtain (inside
the hazardous zone)

Muting devices are installed such that they cannot get active and the light curtain (SL-C Series)
cannot go to a muting state even if a person inadvertently approaches the light curtain's detection
zone.

If the BBP unit creates a new hazardous zone allowing human approach, additional safety
protective equipment such as a safe guard are installed for that zone.

5-1-2 Checking wiring

For the power supply to the SL-R12EX, only a dedicated power supply must be used to supply
power to the SL-C Series light curtain system, including the SL-R11 and the SL-R12EX. No other
device can be supplied from the same power supply.

The SL-U2 power supply recommended by Keyence or a 24 V DC power supply that satisfies the
requirements defined in this instruction manual is used as the power supply for the SL-R12EX.
(

See 1-4 Power supply requirements on page 1-6).

The BBP transmitter cable (gray) is correctly connected to the BBP transmitter cable connector,
and the BBP receiver cable (black) is also correctly connected to the BBP receiver cable connector.
