Port 0-16 of the base channel switch are configured as SGMII interfaces, so they can support
auto-negotiation. Ports 17-23 can be either configured as SGMII or SERDES channels. Port
configuration is done by software.
4.7.1
Base Channel PHYs
The ATCA-F125 uses two Broadcom BCM54680 octal PHYs, a BCM54616S PHY, and a
BCM8747 PHY for the base channel. Each BCM54680 supports eight SGMII channels to the
BCM56334 and provides the physical layer functions for the 10/100/1000Base-T connections
or 10/100-T connections to the backplane. The BCM54616S PHY is a single PHY that supports
an SGMII channel to the BCM56334 and provides the physical layer functions for a
10/100/1000 Base-T connection to the backplane.
The BCM8747 PHY is a four port XAUI to 10 Gb SFI PHY that provides the interface between
two of the Base Switch 10 GbE stacking ports and the front panel SFP+ modules. The other two
ports of the BCM8747 PHY provide the interface between two of the Fabric Switch 10 GbE
stacking ports and the front panel SFP+ modules. The BCM8747 requires an external SPI flash
device to load microcode into the device. An AT25256B or equivalent SPI flash device is used
for this purpose.
