Configuring the Backup Server Feature

If you have more than one Windows NT server on a network, you can
use the “Backup Server” checkbox to define one server as the primary
server for a given RocketPort Serial Hub unit and one or more other
servers as backup servers for the same RocketPort Serial Hub unit.

Once configured, primary-to-backup server switching is automatic. In
the event that the primary server loses control of the unit (for example,
because the primary server is down), the backup server begins counting
down the time entered in the “Time Out” field. If, at the end of this time
the primary server is still down, the backup server assumes control of
the device, in the process resetting it and reloading it with the
configuration information set up on the backup server.

To return control to the primary NT server, terminate all
communications in progress and then cycle the power on the unit.
When the unit comes back up, it will reestablish contact with its
primary NT server.

Use the following procedure to configure a backup server:

1.

At a backup server (not the primary), install VS-Link using the
procedure Installing a New Version of VS-Link on Page 20.

2.

At Step 11, click on the Backup Server checkbox.

3.

Using the Timeout droplist, select how long the backup server
should wait before taking control and then click the OK button.

Note: This field is accessible only if “Backup Server” is checked,

designating this NT server as the backup server for the
selected
RocketPort Serial Hub unit.
