6 – Communications
• Communications between the PC Online software and the TopKAT Online System can be
wired as either a wireless solution or as a direct connect solution.
• If direct connection is used only one Online TopKAT system is allowed.
• If wireless communication is used, multiple Online TopKAT systems are allowed.
• The site must be all wireless or direct connection. Both wired and wireless Online
TopKAT systems are not allowed.
Wireless Communication
For information on wireless modem installations, refer to MDE-4520 Enhanced
Communications Installation Manual.
Note: Port 2, RS-232 must be used at the Online TopKAT FMS system for the Coyote
DataCom wireless modems.
• The wireless solution for the PC TopKAT Online System can support multiple Online
TopKAT FMS Systems at the same location using just one base station at the PC running
the Online Software and one FMS station at each of the Online TopKAT systems.
• Multiple “wireless” Online TopKAT(s) use is exclusive to the PC Online TopKAT System
and cannot be accomplished with standard Gasboy TopKAT firmware and polling
software.
• This method uses Coyote DataCom wireless modems.
Direct Connection
For information on RS-232/422/485 wiring requirements, refer to MDE-4319 TopKAT Fuel
Management System Installation Manual.
Note: Port 3 must be used for direct connection for the PC TopKAT Online FMS system.
• Port 3: RS-232 using a Gasboy terminations box for distances 50-feet and lesser.
• RS-232 communications between the PC Online software and the Online TopKAT must
rarely be used, but is allowed.
• Port 3: RS-422/485 using a Gasboy SHM for distances up to 1500-feet.
• Power for the Gasboy SHM must come from the same panel, same phase as the Online
TopKAT to avoid damage due to spikes or surges.
