EA. The guide contents provide an overview of the product which includes the architecture, functional
description, and user interface (UI) components. The overview section is followed by details on
the installation which includes requirements, licensing, and configuration. Administrative functions and the UI
details (i.e. navigation / screens) are explained in detail in subsequent sections.

1-1 Product Overview

Events represent the heartbeat of any system and therefore the timely analysis and management of
events is critical. EA provides a NonStop point of view and tools to be proactive in the pursuit of
maximum NonStop availability. EA has the ability to generate alerts based on threshold criteria of
particular event activity. This can serve as a significant early warning sign that a function or
application is deteriorating or having issues.

EA is a plug-in to WVP that provides valuable insights into the events that are generated on the
NonStop server. EA summarizes events based on type, owner, subsystem, and time period. It also
provides the user with the ability to graph and trend the important event attributes. A user can see
what applications, what time period, what day of the week is/are generating the most events, and
how long it takes to respond to action-required events.

EA operates a subsystem and manages all the EA processes and amount of resources used. EA
provides a browser based UI using Microsoft Internet Explorer that is intuitive and easy to use. The
plug-in looks at the EMS log files once each day and summarizes the events information into a set
of data tables that enable the UI to efficiently run queries on the event counts. Event counts are
displayed at the yearly level, and allow drill down into each month, day, or hour to figure out where
the problem areas exist. All statistics, where possible, are graphically displayed using intuitive and
easy-to-understand line, bar and pie charts.
