MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
I MAINTENANCE OF THE AXLES
For the lubrication of the SOMA axles refer to specification STC 5-101
The filling and draining are explained in the specification STC 5-102.
II TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS
If the parts are clean and properly lubricated, it is rare to find damaged bearings during removal.
Therefore, one must avoid removing them because they may be damaged by the puller.
1) Reasons for bearing removal.
Abnormal wear of the bearing surface.
Chipped bearing (due to improper cleaning at assembly, or improper lubrication or debris.)
2) Assembly precautions.
Check the cleanliness of the bearing:
-If it is a new one, unpack it just before assembly, if not, it may be solvent cleaned and oiled.
-When possible it is preferable to install bearings by cooling the cone and heating (in oil at 175° F.)
If cooling/heating are impractical, use of a press is preferable to impact installation.
-When a bearing has been heated for assembly, apply a small amount of grease or oil after
assembly.
III SEALS
1) O’rings: Replace at removal.
2) Lip Seals: We recommemd replacement when removed.
The bore must be carefully deburred and greased prior to installing the seal (according to specification STC
1-109). Care should be taken not to damage the sealing surfaces when installing the seal.
It’s better to install a seal with a press than with an impact tool.
IV TIGHTENING TORQUES
The tightening torques indicated in this manual must be observed: under tightening may lead to sheared bolts.
Over tightening may lead to permanent stretch of the bolt, and damage of the parts.
V REPLACING A WHEEL STUD
A broken or stripped wheel stud must be replaced.
Use a drift and a hammer to remove the bolt.
The new one may be installed with hammer or press.
