Note: The following pages refer to the ISDN feature available only with the Eicon 1551 WAN Router.
Each option is described in the following table. For background information on ISDN
concepts, see
PPP
Only one ISDN B-channel (64 Kbps) is used by the Eicon 1551
when the ISDN port is used. This leaves the other B-channel free
to be used for other purposes.
MLPPP
With MLPPP (Multilink PPP), both ISDN B-channels are used at
the same time, creating a single 128 kbps PPP communications
link. Both B-channels remain in use as long as the connection is
active, which may result in excessive ISDN connection charges if
the link is frequently idle.
MLPPP+BACP
MLPPP+BACP works in a similar way to MLPPP, as both
B-channels are combined into a single 128 kbps link. However, the
Eicon 1551 uses BACP (Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol) to
open or close the second ISDN B-channel as the traffic volume
warrants.
This reduces your communications charges by ensuring that two
ISDN channels are never active when one is sufficient. When the
ISDN line is open, however, one B-channel is always in use.
