Catalog Files

Catalog Files

Each SMF process uses its own catalog, which is a group of files enabled by TMF
containing persistent configuration and status information needed for process start up
and execution. When you start a process for the first time, three catalog files are set
up, the $ZSMS catalog, the storage pool process catalog, and the virtual disk process
catalog.

$ZSMS Catalog

Five files make up the $ZSMS catalog:

Virtual disk process attribute set:

STARTDOWN

STARTSTATE

Specifies if the execution state of the
virtual disk process should be set to UP
or DOWN when the process is started.
This is useful if you are trying to
diagnose a problem and do not want
processes to start automatically, or if you
have a large SMF configuration and want
to bring up parts of it separately.

CACHESIZE

CACHESIZE

Specifies the number of file mappings in
the SMF name cache. In some cases,
this can be used to improve file open
performance. See

VDP and File System

Caches

on page 2-4.

IDENTITY

Contains the name of the process that created the catalog.

PENDOPS

Stores information about operations in progress that is used for
recovery if $ZSMS fails.

VERSION

Contains SMF version information.

POOLTBL

Contains one entry for each storage pool defined by using PUP or
SCF, as described later in this section. Entries are used when a
storage pool process starts and to provide information in response to
PUP or SCF inquiries. Entries are created when you use the PUP
DEFINEPOOL command or SCF ADD POOL command, modified
when you use PUP REDEFINEPOOL or SCF ALTER POOL
command, or deleted when you use PUP DELETEPOOL or SCF
DELETE POOL command.
