Virtual Disk Processes
pool processes are responsible for keeping information about the virtual disk
processes that make use of services provided by the pool.
Virtual Disk Processes
Virtual disk processes (VDPs) handle the mapping between logical and physical file
names to support location-independent naming. The virtual disk process maintains a
name catalog that contains name-mapping information for logical and physical names
of files that reside on the logical volume it manages (see
This information is used for various operations that involve the use of a file name,
including create, purge, and rename operations.
VDPs support the creation of format 1 and format 2 files. Format 2 Enscribe files are
supported on the D46 and G06 (or later) product versions of SMF. Format 2 SQL files
are supported by G06 or later product versions of SMF.
Virtual disk processes also gather information on the status of their pools and
associated physical volumes and determine where best to place or move files.
SMF Catalogs
Each of the SMF processes maintains a catalog of information. Each catalog is
comprised of Enscribe key-sequenced files that are audited by the HP NonStop
Transaction Management Facility (TMF) subsystem.
$ZSMS Process Catalog
The catalog for the $ZSMS process contains:
Configuration information for other SMF processes
Information about pending operations (see
Catalog version information
Pool Process Catalogs
The catalog for each pool process contains:
Configuration information for physical volumes associated with the pool
Information about the catalogs of virtual disk processes associated with the pool
Information about pending operations (see
