Setting Up the Palm-SPEC

This chapter contains instructions for physically configuring the Palm-SPEC equipment.

Connecting the Palm-SPEC Equipment

Follow the instructions and diagrams below to connect your Palm-SPEC equipment:

Install Microsoft ActiveSync

Before connecting and configuring the Palm-SPEC equipment, you must install Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7 (or later)
on your desktop or laptop. This software comes with your handheld PC and is accompanied by a certificate of
authenticity. It allows you to transfer data to and from the handheld PC via the desktop or laptop PC.

1. Insert the CD into your desktop or laptop PC and follow the on screen instructions.

2. Read the readme.txt file included on the installation CD.

Once you have installed the ActiveSync software, continue to the next section.

Uninstall Non-essential Software

Included with your handheld PC is a CD containing auxiliary software for your handheld PC. The installation of
this software is optional. However, installing these programs will greatly reduce the amount of memory available
on your handheld PC.

Ocean Optics recommends that you do not install any other software programs on the handheld PC while you are
using the Palm-SPEC system.

Install the OOIPSCU Palm-SPEC Conversion Utility Software

The OOIPSCU Palm-SPEC Conversion Utility software (which runs on your desktop or laptop PC) allows you to
transfer Palm-SPEC files to and from the Palm-SPEC and your desktop or laptop PC. You must first install
ActiveSync (see above) in order to use this utility.

For OOIPSCU installation instructions, see page 33.

Connection Instructions for Palm-SPEC Handheld PC Versions

Since its introduction, Ocean Optics has used a variety of models of handheld PCs as the Palm-SPEC platform.
Due to differences in the varying models, Ocean Optics has had to customize certain elements of hardware
and/or power connection to some degree.

The following sections detail custom connection instructions for each version of the Palm-SPEC hardware. Follow
the instructions for your particular handheld PC model.

If your ordered a newer Palm-SPEC system that ships with the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, your Palm-SPEC
system features a customized power adapter that allows you to power both the iPAQ and the Palm-SPEC. The
AC adapter features two 1.3mm plugs to connect to the iPAQ cradle and the Palm-SPEC.

Follow the instructions in the following table to connect this power adapter. Refer to the diagram below for more
information, if necessary:
