This chapter contains an overview of Palm-SPEC operation and component specifications.
How the Palm-SPEC Works
The Palm-SPEC Spectrophotometer uses a 2048-element linear CCD array detector inside of a miniature cross
Czerny-Turner optical bench with a 600 lines/mm grating. This provides a simultaneous display of 2048
wavelengths over the 370-950 nm range. The system also features a built-in light source consisting of a long-life
tungsten bulb paired with multiple violet LEDs. The sampling system is designed for use with 1 cm square
cuvettes and includes a cuvette holding rack.
The result of this innovative design is remarkable performance: Optical resolution of ~2.0 nm FWHM, stray light of
<0.05% and photometric linearity of ~99.9%.

Note: The Palm-SPEC handheld PC ships with Pocket PC 2002 or later installed. Earlier versions of the Palm-
SPEC handheld PC featured Windows CE. While functionally similar, there are aesthetic differences
between the screen shots shown in this manual and on the Windows CE handheld PCs.
