15 SIM reporting
The local array generates service information messages (SIMs) to notify you of possible array
service requirements. SIMs can be generated by the array's channel and storage path
microprocessors and service processor (SVP). The SVP reports all SIMs related to XP Continuous
Access Journal processing. Each time a SIM is generated, the amber Message LED on the array's
control panel (under the Ready and Alarm LEDs) turns on as an additional alert.
SIMs are classified according to severity for reporting and logging purposes: service, moderate,
serious, or acute. All SIMs are recorded on the array's SVP and displayed on XP Command View
Advanced Edition Software management stations or XP Remote Web Console. You can find SIMs
in the XP Command View Advanced Edition Software or XP Remote Web Console Status pane.
SIMs the primary array generates include the primary data volume's device ID (byte 13). SIMs the
secondary array generates include the secondary data volume's device ID (byte 13).

If SNMP is installed and operational for the local array, each SIM results in an SNMP trap. For
more information about SNMP operations, see the HP StorageWorks XP Command View user
guide for XP Disk Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide, or contact
your HP account support representative for assistance.
shows a typical 32-byte SIM from the local array. The six-digit reference code
(RC) consists of bytes 22, 23, and 13. The RC identifies the possible error and determines the
severity. The SIM type (byte 28) indicates the component that experienced the error. When the
value of byte 22 is 21, the SIM is a control unit SIM. When the value of byte 22 is Dx (where x
is an arbitrary character), the SIM is a device SIM.
