Tracing IPSetup Activities
Tracing IPSetup Activities
You can set IPSetup to trace its activities, which creates a special log of events as they
are generated while running IPSetup. Logs generated by running a trace can be used
to diagnose problems you might encounter while running the IPSetup Windows
application.
Running Trace
There are two ways to enable the trace option:
Specify the trace option in a Windows shortcut or a Run command prior to starting
IPSetup:
C:\> X:\IPSETUP\IPSETUP.EXE TRACE
This method provides tracing of all IPSetup events after IPSetup is started and
opens the Trace Window while IPSetup is running. All trace functions are then
controlled through the IPSetup Windows application.
Open the Trace Window while running IPSetup by selecting Trace Window from
the system menu. This method enables tracing from the time you open the Trace
Window. Events are sent to the Trace Window only when it is open. If you clear the
option in the system menu, events are no longer sent to the Trace Window but
continue to be logged in IPSetup’s regular log file.
IPSetup Log File
The regular IPSetup log file
IPSetup.Log
is created in the Windows directory
(typically
C:\WINDOWS
or
C:\WIN95
in Windows 95, or
C:\Winnt4
or
C:\Winnt
in
Windows NT 4.0). This log file is created each time you run the IPSetup Windows
application and contains all logged events. (Some traces might contain only a subset of
all logged events, depending on when the Trace Window was created.)
All event entries in
IPSetup.Log
have this format:
DDMMYY, HH: MM: SS [n] EventText
where:
DDMMYY
is the day, month, and year of the event.
HH: MM: SS
is the hour, minute, and second of the event.
n
is the log level of the event.
EventText
is the description text of the event.
The IPSetup log file can become large, especially when trace is activated. Therefore,
IPSetup deletes its log file each time it is run. To save an IPSetup log file, copy it to
another location before running IPSetup again.
