If you wish to test ISA adapters which have not yet been configured, use SMIT to
configure the adapter before running diagnostics.
8.3 Online Diagnostics
The Online Diagnostics are an AIX Version 4.1 installable package. They are
packaged under
bos.diag
. There is a separate, installable option for each device
or adapter supported by diagnostics. If you install your system from an AIX Version
4.1.4 for Servers install CD-ROM, diagnostics will be automatically installed on your
system, including diagnostics support for any PCI devices which are physically
installed in your system. In addition, if you install any PCI devices and configure
them to the system using
cfgmgr -i
(or use SMIT to add devices after IPL)
specifying an installation device, diagnostics support for the device (if available) will
be automatically installed. When you install device support for ISA adapters, you
can chose whether to install diagnostic support for each adapter. Running Online
Diagnostics provides you with access to the AIX Error Log and the AIX
Configuration Data, but again, you are limited to which devices you can test.
If the diagnostics package,
bos.diag
is installed on your system, you will be able to
run Online Diagnostics. This is useful when you have a networked system at a
remote site or if you wish to run diagnostics without using the diagnostics CD-ROM.
If you manually install diagnostics, you will have to install diagnostics support for
each device in your system because this is not automatic. Each device has its own
diagnostics support which can be installed separately. You can determine which
devices in your system have diagnostic support loaded by performing the following:
1. Type:
diag
2. Press Enter on the main screen, and then select: Service Aids
3. Select: Display or Change Diagnostic Test List
4. Finally, select: Display the Diagnostic Test List
If a device installed in your system is not listed, refer to your installation media to
see if the device comes with a diagnostics support fileset.
Online Diagnostics can be run in the following three modes:
Service Mode
Maintenance Mode
Concurrent Mode
These three modes are discussed in the following sections.
8.3.1 Concurrent Mode
The Concurrent mode provides a way to run Online Diagnostics on the system
resources while AIX is up and running.
As the system is running in normal operation, some resources cannot be tested in
Concurrent mode. The following list shows which resources cannot be tested:
SCSI adapters used by disks connected to paging devices
The disk drives used for paging
