cannot handle will result in an unreadable screen and possible damage to your
display.
Note: AIX V4.1.4 will not allow you to alter the resolution of your display if you
select either of the alternative VESA-compliant options. Trying to change the
resolution through SMIT will result in an error stating that the
Other_HiRes_VES
attribute does not exist in the predefined device configuration database. To fix this
problem, you must install Authorized Program Analysis Report (APAR) IX53366. If
you want to change the resolution of your display without installing the APAR,
change the display type to any of the others which are listed above, and then, after
consulting your display's user guide for supported resolutions, change your
resolution through SMIT.
5.6.4 Multiple Adapter Support
The E20 supports one S15 graphics adapter, and the F30 supports two. Through
testing, however, we found that using two graphics adapters on our E20 worked in
the same way as on the F30. There is no guarantee that this will be the same for
every E20 as this configuration is not supported.
5.6.4.1 Configuring a Second PCI Graphics Adapter
To install and begin using a second graphics adapter is very simple:
1. Shut down and power-off the RS/6000.
2. Install the new S15 graphics card (refer to the System's User Guide that is
provided with your system).
3. Power-on the RS/6000
During the firmware boot phase, only one monitor will display the POST icons.
After the AIX boot image takes control in the boot process, the system will
present the following message on the first display:
ᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍ Please define the System Console ᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍ
Type the F1 key and press Enter to use this display as the
system console.
The following message will appear on the second display:
ᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍ Please define the System Console ᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍᑍ
Type the F2 key and press Enter to use this display as the
system console.
This process sets the default system console for the current session and for
subsequent reboots. Upon subsequent reboots, the request to define the
system console will not appear.
The graphics adapter should have been configured by AIX automatically and can
be used straight away. To determine if the graphics adapter has been installed,
you can run the
lsdisp
command. This will show the graphics adapters available
in your system:
lsdisp
