ICTIONARIES
For those who rely on the PostScript page description lan-
guage for CIE-based color space matching, the magicolor
2210 has three built-in color rendering dictionaries
(CRDs)—Colorimetric, Business, and Photographic—to
produce printer calibrated images. These CRDs are selec-
table from both the printer drivers or via the front panel.
The MINOLTA-QMS-developed Colorimetric CRD can be
used for very basic color matching and one-to-one conver-
sion for CIE color to CMYK color. For those colors that
cannot be produced on the printer, the closest color the
printer can produce is substituted.
The Business CRD simulates colors found on the typical
RGB computer display and is intended for use with busi-
ness graphics.
The MINOLTA-QMS-developed Photographic CRD is
used for optimizing the quality of photographic images.
Colors that are out of the printer’s gamut (color range) are
replaced with the closest color in the gamut. When this
substitution is made, other specified colors, whether in the
printer’s gamut range or not, are adjusted equivalently so
that the overall image appearance and contrast is main-
tained. This technique is known as gamut compression.
The advantage of using these PostScript-compatible CRDs
is that they are printer resident, providing the same color
matching across different computing platforms. They also
offload the burden from the host system to the printer.
However, there is no on-screen preview of output using
this method of color matching, and the user is not warned
if a color is out of the printer’s gamut.
