12 Patch management

12.1 Introduction

CAUTION
After a patch runs successfully, a patchstate.dat file is created at the root directory of the
flash memory. Do not delete the file; if you delete the file, the patch remains invalid after
restart.
Carrier service must provide long-term operation without interruption. You can upgrade and
maintain the router by installing patches. This does not a^ect the operation of the router.
You can run only one system patch at a time. As a result, you need to confirm that no patch is
running in the current system before you install a patch. If a patch is running in the system,
delete the patch before you install the new patch.
You can use the patch program released by Nortel to upgrade the Secure Router 8000 Series
system software. A patch program has three statuses: activated, deactivated, and running.
Figure 12-1 shows the conversion between the three statuses.

You can perform the following patch-related tasks:
