Creating a Virtual Wire
L ON W ORKS networks that do not connect to an IP network may be quite large. A
L ON W ORKS network may contain 255 subnets each containing as many as 127 devices.
Subnets are linked together using L ON W ORKS routers. A common implementation is to
have many FT subnets connected to a single TP-1250 “high speed” backbone.

The high-speed backbone is a physical wire and, since all TP-1250 to FT routers are
connected to the same physical wire, communication proceeds unimpeded.
