7. Data Plane Interconnection Subsystem
External I/O traffic through the Front/RTM service ports or the backplane fabric ports of
the blade traverses a set of CN6880 network processors either for ingress processing or
egress processing. The fabric Ethernet switch sits next to the set of CN6880 processors
to interconnect various ports that are available in the blade, including the CN6880 ports,
the backplane ports, the Front ports and the RTM ports. The features of the switch and
the way the switch interconnects all the ports are therefore, critical for the design to meet
the overall requirements. The blade has a 320Gbps capacity switch for these purposes.
7.1. Switch Features: BCM56842
The Trident+ switch family from Broadcom offers three pin-to-pin compatible devices that
will include different functional feature sets. Any device can be selected to offer future
feature sets by simply replacing a device and software additions. The selected switch,
BCM56842, offers 320Gbps of bandwidth.
Some of the features are summarized in Table 7-1, where the details can be found in the
expanded list (Table 4: BCM56840 Device Scalability) from the BCM56840_PLUS
Advanced Data Sheet.

7.2. SerDes Interface
The Trident+ switch device has 72 SerDes lanes associated with 18 WarpCores (4
SerDes links per Warp Core) with different types of the data plane speeds including 1G,
10G, and 40G enabled by the WarpCores. Actual SerDes bit rate varies according to
data speeds including 1.25Gbps, 3.125Gbps, 6.25Gbps, and 10.3125Gbps per serial
link. The SerDes port connections are illustrated in Figure 7-1 and Table 7-2.
