Turn down the screen brightness, turn off virtual memory,
move the battery conservation slider in the PowerBook
control panel to Better Conservation, or work with the power
adapter plugged in.

n

Your computer supplies power to the modem whenever a
communications program is open. Quit your communications
program if you aren’t using it.

n

If you aren’t using network services, you can also save power
by turning off AppleTalk in the Chooser.

n

Your battery may need to be discharged and recharged
completely. See Chapter 6.

n

Older PowerBook batteries do not hold a charge as well as
new ones. You may need to replace the battery.

The battery can’t be recharged.

n

There may be a loose connection. Make sure all plugs are
securely attached.

n

If all connections are OK, then the battery is probably
damaged or dead. You’ll need to obtain a replacement battery
from your Apple-authorized dealer.

The computer goes to sleep too often.

n

Open the PowerBook control panel and slide the slider to
Better Performance.

The PowerBook won’t run off the battery and/or the
battery won’t charge.

n

Make sure your PowerBook is running system software
version 7.1 or later. You may have a new battery which
requires the later system software version.
