Setting the Line Card’s Mode of Operation
You can choose one of seven modes of operation for the ports on a line
card. The modes determine what response the line card makes when an
optical signal is present or interrupted. The modes include a default mode
and six other modes divided into two groups: three missing link disabled
modes and three fixed loopback modes, as shown in Table 4.
In the missing link modes, the data path automatically changes depending
upon the presence or absence of an optical signal. The default and all the
fixed loopback modes provide only fixed data paths.
The value of these operation modes is that you can configure some
switches to take a specific action when a connection is lost. In some
cases, you can configure the unit to seek a redundant path to the
disconnected node and send out a trap to a network management station,
alerting the network administrator of the problem.
You can use the loopback modes for troubleshooting and mode 3 or mode
7 in a regeneration application.
