Creating a virtual private network
A virtual private network (VPN) is an interconnection between two networks that uses the PPTP
(point-to-point tunneling protocol). By using the Internet to transport data, a VPN can eliminate long distance
charges associated with traditional dial-up solutions. And, since PPTP provides a secure connection, network
security is not compromised.
To create a VPN
1.
Create a connection to the Internet as described in Chapter Two.
2.
Contact the administrator of the network you want to attach to and obtain the following:
• the IP address or host name of the VPN server
• For each user that will be connected to the VPN:
• user name
• password
3.
Go to the Microsoft web site and download Dial-Up Networking 1.3.
4.
Install Dial-Up Networking 1.3 on each computer that will be connected to the VPN.
5.
When Dial Up Networking is installed, create a new connection. Double-click My Computer, and then
double-click Dial-Up Networking. You will see the following dialog box.
6.
Enter a name for your connection.
7.
Select Microsoft VPN Adapter as the device.
