PART 1
THE REVOLVING FIELD AC GENERATOR
1
SECTION 1.7- TROUBLESHOOTING
(UNITS WITH 10 INCH STATOR)
Diagnostic Tests (Continued)
Procedure: Add up the w atts or am peres required
to run all lights, appliances, m otors, tools, etc., that w ill
be pow ered by the generator at one tim e. This totatl
should not be greater than the generator’s rated w att
age and/or am perage capacity. Rated w attage and
am perage of the generator can be found on the unit’s
DATA PLATE.
Results:
1. If frequency and voltage drop excessively w hen load
is applied, but unit is NOT overloaded, go to Test 15.
2. If unit is overloaded, reduce the total load to a
w attage or am perage value that is w ithin the unit's rated
capacity.
NOTE: A badly shorted condition in the load circuit can
also cause frequency and voltage to drop drastically
when the load is applied.
TEST 18- CHECK ENGINE POW ER & CONDITION:
Discussion: If the engine has lost pow er, AC out
put voltage and frequency w ill droop w hen the load is
applied. The lim it to AC output current (am ps) is often
established by available engine pow er. Loss of engine
pow er can resuit from such things as a dirty air cleaner,
burned valves, m echanical dam age, out-of-tim e, etc.
Procedure: Inspect and test the engine. Look for
anything that m ight cause the engine to lose pow er.
