2.2 Brief description
The Actuator-Sensor-Interface (AS-i) has been established as a system for net-
working primarily binary sensors and actuators on the lowest level of the automa-
tion hierarchy. The large number of installed systems, ease of use and reliable
operating behavior make AS-i also ideal for machine safety applications.
The safe AS-i system is intended for safety applications up to Category 4/SIL 3.
Mixed use of standard components and safety components is possible.
The AS-i Safety Monitor performs monitoring within an AS-i system of the user-
assigned safety slaves based on the configuration the user has set using configu-
ration software. In case of a Stop request or a fault condition, the AS-i Safety
Monitor safety shuts off the system with a response time of maximum 40 ms.

Multiple Safety Monitors can be used within one AS-i system. A safe slave can be
monitored by more than one AS-i Safety Monitor.
