Many of your boat’s systems have crtcal features

located n the blge area. a thorough and organzed

nspecton of the blge area wll address many of

these crtcal features. For example, engne ol

leaks and fuel system leaks wll show themselves

as contamnaton on the surface of the lqud

that remans n the blge. When you see such

contamnaton, you should look for ts source.

Once or twce a year, pump the blge areas dry and

remove all loose drt. Be sure that all the lmber

holes are open. lmber holes are the openngs n the

stringers that allow water to flow from the outboard

areas of the blge to the blge sump.

Check the bilge pump float switch by moving it

manually. (Fgure 4.1.2) The blge pump should start

when the float switch is raised and should stop when

lowered. If t does not, have t replaced before usng

your boat. The float switch should also move freely

wthout stckng, f t does not, have t servced or

replaced before boatng.

If there s ol contamnaton, look for leaks n engne

ol lnes and engne gaskets. If parts of the blge

have been staned by ol, the stan can be removed

usng a blge cleaner avalable from your dealer or

a marne store.

• Inspect the entre fuel system for evdence of

leakage, including the fuel tank fill lines and

vents. any stan around a jont could be an

ndcaton of a leak.

• Test all fittings with a wrench to be sure they are

not loose, but do not forcefully overtghten the

fittings.

• Clean fuel filters and vent screens.

nGine

Engne falure or malfuncton, when away from

shore, can be dangerous. Make certan you do the

followng each tme you use the boat:

• Wpe off the engne to remove accumulated

dust, grease and ol.

• Check all exposed nuts, bolts and screws for

tghtness.

• Inspect the belts for wear. If they do not

requre replacement, check and adjust the belt

tenson accordng to the engne manufacturer’s

recommendaton.

• Inspect engne wrng, and clean and tghten the

termnals on the engne electrcal system.

• Clean and lubrcate the battery cables.
• add dstlled water to the battery cells as

needed.

• Refer to your Engne Operator’s Manual for

addtonal engne mantenance requrements.

DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE SOLVENTS to clean any

part of the bilge.

Fumes can accumulate and can be the source of an

explosion.

Work on electrical wiring can create shock hazards

or sparks.

Always shut off battery switch, breakers and/or

pull fuses before checking electrical wiring or

connectors.
