Certan precautons must be carefully and completely

observed every tme a boat s fueled, even wth

desel fuel. Desel fuel s nonexplosve but t wll

burn.

There s a danger that statc electrcty can gnte

gasolne vapors that have not been ventlated

outsde an enclosed area. Use extreme cauton

when fuelng your boat from a source outsde the

regular venues.

crcumvented by not adherng to standard fuelng

practces.

the buld-up of statc electrcty.

your boat must be n contact wth the water or a land

based groundng system. here are some helpful

suggestons to keep you safe from statc electrcty

whle refuelng your boat.

• nEVER fuel your boat n unsafe condtons such

as: suspended on a slng or n a stuaton that

ncreases the lkelhood of statc dscharge.

• nEVER use homemade containers to fill your

fuel tank.

• Fuel carried onboard, outside of a fixed fuel

system should be stored n an approved

contaner or n a portable tank, such as provded

for outboard engnes, and be stowed safely

outsde of the engne or lvng compartments.

• shutdown the engne, motors, and fans pror to

takng on fuel. any gnton sources should be

extinguished before filling the fuel tank.

• Close all ports, wndow, doors, and hatches.

• Fuelng should never be done at nght except

n well-lghted areas.

• always keep the fuel nozzle n contact wth the

fuel fill plate or the edge of the fuel tank opening

throughout the filling process.

• allow areas where gasolne vapors could collect

to be ventlated before startng the engne.

• Wpe any spllage completely and dspose of

rags or waste on shore.

• Secure the fill cap tightly.

• Fuel tank should never be filled to capacity.

allow for fuel expanson.

• Portable tanks should only be filled while on the

ground; never onboard the boat.

:

• Check fill plate label to ensure fuel is placed only

in fuel tank. Fuel fill plate is located on the port

sde of the boat.

• know your fuel capacty and consumpton.

Record the amount of fuel used snce your last

fill up, and compute the engine’s hourly fuel

usage. as a fuel gauge backup check, deduct

the average hourly fuel usage from fuel tank

capacty.

• Observe the “Rule of Thrds”: one-thrd fuel for

trp out, one-thrd for return and one-thrd for

reserve.

• allow an addtonal 15 percent fuel reserve when

operatng n rough seas.
