The shft/throttle control unt for the engne s actvated
by ndvdual handles. (see Fgure 2.5.1) The shft
handle must be n neutral poston to start your engne.
Movng the shft handle forward engages the forward
gear. Then move the throttle arm or handle forward to
ncrease engne speed and propeller RPM, movng the
boat faster. To shft to reverse, brng the shft handle
lever back to the neutral poston after brngng back the
throttle handle first, then move it further back to engage
the reverse gear. Move the throttle handle to ncrease
engne speed and propeller RPM, movng the boat faster
n reverse.
The throttle control adjusts the RPM of the engne and
thus, the rotatonal speed of the propeller. Regulatng the
RPM of the engne controls the speed of the boat.
Do not shft to reverse too soon. Wat for the followng
wake to dsspate.

The Power Trm allows the operator to rase and lower
the stern drve unt whle underway to provde the deal
boat angle (n relaton to water surface) for a gven load
and water condton. (see Fgure 2.5.2)
Trmmng UP rotates the stern drve and propeller away
from the transom. Trmmng DOWn rotates the stern
drve and propeller closer to the transom.
When the stern drve s trmmed DOWn, the bow of your
boat s beng forced down. If the trm s n the full DOWn
poston when acceleratng from dle to plane, the boat
wll plane faster wth less bow rse. Once on plane, the
stern drve unt can be trmmed UP slghtly. Ths wll
rase the bow of the boat slghtly and ncrease speed.
you wll need to try small dfferences n the stern drve
poston to determne the trm poston you prefer under
varous condtons.
If you rase the stern drve up too far whle on plane, you
could cause a loss of speed and power due to a condton
called propeller "ventlaton." If ths happens, there wll
be a sudden ncrease n engne RPM and loss of speed.
Do not let ths condton exst. Immedately reduce your
engne RPM and trm the outdrve DOWn slghtly untl
engne slows down and you regan forward speed.
The trm gauge ndcates the poston of the stern drve
relatve to the transom.

(FIg. 2.5.1)
Forward moton creates forward movng water called a
"followng" wake. If the boat s movng forward and the
shft/throttle s moved quckly from forward to reverse,
the boat wll stop rapdly and then move backward. The
followng wake contnues to move forward and can rse
above the transom and flood the boat.
Cockpit can fill with water if boat is moving forward,
when it is put into reverse.
Before shifting into reverse, shift to neutral, wait
for the boat to stop moving forward, then shift into
reverse.
