In the event of flooding, swamping or capsizing:

• Try to shut off engnes, generators and blowers

before leavng the boat.

• have everyone put on Personal Flotaton Devces

(PFDs).

• account for all who were on board.

• If the boat is floating stay with the boat. Hang on, or

clmb on the boat and sgnal for help.

• Only as a last resort should you attempt to swm to

shore - t s further away than t looks and you can

tre and drown.

In the event of collsons and leakng:

• slow down or stop to reduce water ntake, unless

mantanng speed wll keep the hole above water.

• swtch on blge pump.

• Operate manual blge pump, f the powered blge

pump can't handle the water flow.

• account for everyone on board and check for

njures.

• have everyone put on PFDs.

• stay wth the boat.

• sgnal for help.

• If a leak patch s attempted, t should be done from

the outsde.

• In the event of a collision, you are required to file an

accdent report. Contact a state enforcement agency

or the nearest Coast Guard office. If you are boating

outsde of U.s. waters, consult the naton you are

vstng for accdent reportng requrements.

• Try to approach headng nto the wnd or nto the

waves.

• keep the vctm on the rght (starboard) sde so the

boat operator has the vctm constantly n sght.

• When almost alongsde, stop the engne n gear to

prevent propeller "wndmllng."

Getting Back Aboard
• Try to reach the vctm wth a pole, or by throwng

a lfe preserver. Do not swm to rescue the vctm,

except as a last resort.

• assst the person n boardng the boat. The person

should normally be brought n over the stern.

• If the person s njured or cannot get nto the boat,

a rescuer should put on a PFD wth a safety lne

attached to the boat and enter the water to assst

the vctm.

• handle the vctm wth care. spnal njures may have

occurred.

ire

Fre s a serous boatng hazard. Boats can burn

quickly. Do not remain on board and fight a fire

for more than a few minutes. If the fire cannot be

extngushed wthn a few mnutes, abandon the

boat.

Have fire extinguishers handy. A small fire can be

extngushed quckly wth the rght sze and type of

fire extinguisher.

• Extngush smokng materals, shut off blowers,

stoves, engnes and generators.

• Throw burnng materals overboard, f possble.

• If the fire is accessible, empty the contents of fire

extinguishers at the base of the flames.

• If the fire is in the engine compartment and you

have an automatc extngusher for the engne, wat

15 mnutes before openng the compartment. have

a portable extinguisher ready in case the fire flares

up.

• grab dstress sgnals and survval gear. Put on

PFDs. Prepare to abandon shp.
