Remote Duplicate Database Facility (RDF)

Protection

Remote Duplicate Database Facility (RDF) Protection

RDF protects audited files by taking the audit generated for the audited files on one
system and applying it to files created on volumes on a different system. The unit of
RDF protection is a volume; that is, you specify that RDF protection is needed for a
volume name on the primary system and that the audit should be applied to a different
volume name on the backup system.

The RDF primary node is responsible for performing any audit translations so that audit
records are understood by the backup system. Therefore, if the backup node is running
SMF, the primary system must run a version of RDF that supports audit translation to
the new SMF audit version. An RDF software version that is compatible with SMF is
available for NonStop systems running D30 and later RVUs. Note that this RDF
software is not needed on the backup system if the primary system is running SMF.
This is because the primary system performs the audit record translations.

System administrators and application developers responsible for systems using RDF
should allow for these restrictions when planning a migration to SMF.

SQL PDR Operations

Some SQL physical database recovery (PDR) operations start the AUDSERV server
processes on remote nodes. These processes read the local TMF audit trail and then
send the audit to other systems. If a SQL PDR operation is run against a table or index
that results in audit being shipped from a non knowledgeable system to a system
running SMF, that operation fails because the audit trail versions are incompatible.

A version of AUDSERV that is compatible with SMF is available to allow proper audit
trail translations from a non knowledgeable system to a system running SMF. This
version of AUDSERV is required for all multi node, PDR operations for systems
running D30 and later RVUs. This applies to SQL PDR operations for direct files or
logically named files.

Note. Installation of the AUDSERV software is dependent on the installation of previously
described TMF software compatible with SMF. The AUDSERV software does not require a
system load at installation time.
