Controlling Process States

Controlling Process States

The commands that modify storage pool and virtual disk attributes and accessibility
require that $ZSMS must be in the UP state, and that the target storage pool or virtual
disk process be in a particular PUP execution state.

Table B-3

defines the execution

states. Use the PUP LISTDEV command to determine the execution state of
processes.

Figure B-3

illustrates the relationship between the PUP commands and execution

states for storage pool processes.

Figure B-4

provides similar information for virtual

disk processes. These figures portray possible scenarios for starting storage pool and
virtual disk processes:

1. The storage pool and virtual disk process-level attributes have been defined using

the COUP ADD command.

2. The storage pool and virtual disk processes are started with the COUP START

command. They are placed in the INACTIVE state because the storage pool and
virtual disk attributes are not yet defined.

3. The storage pool and virtual disk attributes are defined with the PUP

DEFINEPOOL or DEFINEVIRTDISK command, respectively. The processes then
enter the UP or DOWN state, depending on how their STARTDOWN attribute was
configured in the DEFINEPOOL or DEFINEVIRTDISK command.

Table B-3. Storage Pool and Virtual Disk Process Execution States

Execution State

Description

Not executing

The process has not been started using COUP.

INACTIVE

The process has been started using COUP but cannot be used until it
has been defined by using DEFINEPOOL or DEFINEVIRTDISK.

UP

The process is running and fully operational.

DOWN

The process is suspended and available only for information opera-
tions.

UP SPECIAL

The process is available only for catalog maintenance operations using
SMFIXUP.
